Now the thought of giving a wedding speech to a large crowd of people can be quite nerve racking, therefore preparation is key to your speech been a success, key to your speech been remembered in years to come (in a good light, not recalled as an embarrassment) Key to pleasing others at the reception. So many things go through your head – what do I say? Should I be funny? Should I be sentimental? What if I tell a joke and it totally bombs? What if I ruin the reception? You might get the opinions of other groomsmen or bridesmaids and they all have a different idea for what you should do. Before you know it, you’re stuck second guessing the ideas you have yourself and you have no idea where to go with it or how to put your speech together. This is exactly what happened to me, so I finally decided I’d had enough of the opinions…I was going to figure it out for myself.

So I did what everyone does – straight to the internet. I tried a lot of different things. I watched Youtube videos, I Googled just about everything you could think of from “best man speech ideas” to “best man speech examples” – I tried it all. But none of that helped me and it left me feeling like I was going to have to hire a professional writer to make my speech awesome! Fortunately, I never got to that point! Haha. Who has the money to hire a professional writer?!

Eventually, I came across something that really helped me write the most amazing best man speech I’ve ever delivered. I was actually really surprised at how well it worked. I had tried everything else and all of it was lacking. But this one thing nailed it for me. One of the greatest benefits of what I found was that it gave me pre-written speeches I could adapt to my situation that made the speech feel very personal for me and my friends getting married.

I can say this though – I’ve never given the same speech at any wedding I’ve been to or had to speak at. But also it gives you the theory on how to use humour in your speech, so to keep it funny and sincere, and not to over do the jokes. A good best man speech should have jokes here and there. A wholly serious speech is tends to get people bored. However, the selection of jokes for a speech should be done with caution, as you do not want to offend anyone. Best Man Wedding Speeches – Help and ideas!

As I mentioned in my previous post, you want to be funny, fearless, and flawless when you deliver your best man speech, or if you’re the groom, your groom wedding speech. How you end up structuring your speech is everything, as it allows you to really control the crowd and the overall atmosphere of the entire room.

Best Man Toasts

Typically, at some point during the reception, the best man toasts the bride and groom and then will typically deliver his speech following that point. The toast is important, because it grabs attention, and it’s the first thing people will hear out of your mouth. It’s important here to be memorable and funny without being disrespectful or rude. Everyone wants to remember your best man jokes because they made them laugh, not because they were grossly inappropriate. Take my word for it here, I know what I’m talking about! Make sure that your toast is well-planned out and well-timed. The opening toast can then lead you into your speech. I should also mention here that sometimes, the toast will come at the end of the speech, so make sure and take into account how to “land” your speech and transition into the toast.

Best Man Speech Jokes

Remember, don’t go overboard here and remember that sometimes, less is more. Everyone wants to have a good time and everyone is ready to laugh at your best man jokes when the time calls for it. But not everyone is ready to leave with their face hurting because they felt compelled to laugh the entire time. Again, less is more. This is a point that many giving funny wedding toasts often forget – this day is about the bride and groom, not you! So don’t try to steal the show with your jokes. Make sure that your jokes are respectful and draw attention to the bride and groom. Everyone will remember it if they do. And more than likely, the groom will give groom speeches, which you don’t want to totally show up.

In my next post, I’m going to give you some actual best man speech examples from some of the speeches I’ve written and used over and over. These are killer and if they help you as much as they’ve helped me, you’ll have amazing best man speech structure and you’ll be good to go!

Ladies and gentlemen, if there’s anybody here this afternoon who’s feeling nervous, apprehensive and queasy at the thought of what lies ahead, it’s probably because you have just got married to Paul Wilson.

I believe that marriage is a wonderful thing for Paul. It will teach him loyalty, self-restraint and control. And it will develop in him a sense of responsibility, fair play and so many other qualities he wouldn’t need if he had just stayed single.

During my research – and yes, believe it or not, this was researched – I looked into the three key elements of a wedding day: first, the aisle, the longest walk you’ll ever take; second, the altar, the place where two become one; and third, the hymns, to celebrate the marriage. I hope for Paul’s sake that this explains why Linda was whispering ‘aisle, altar, hymn; I’ll, alter, him’ throughout the service.

Paul was telling me he intended to love and nurture his marriage the same way he does with his beloved football. He says he’s going in fully committed, plans to score every week, change ends at half time and play half the season away from home. Funny that, because if he does, Linda reckons it’s a sure fire way of getting a serious groin injury.

I asked Paul what he was looking for in marriage. ‘Love, happiness and eventually a family’ he said. When I asked Linda the same question, she replied, ‘a toaster!’

I never thought that Paul would get married. I remember a few years ago, he said if he ever did, he would have to marry a woman with small feet. ‘Why small feet?’ I asked. ‘So she can get closer to the sink,’ he answered.

There are obviously two very important people here today, without whom very little of this would have been possible. And the great thing is that as the evening progresses, most of us will get to spend more and more time talking with them. So please join me in a very special toast – to the bar staff!

An overview on writing a wedding speech.

It took me a while to realize that there’s actually a method and a best man speech structure that actually goes into writing a really memorable wedding speech. For so long, I attended weddings, and just thought that a lot of the guys that were giving groom speeches were just standing up and saying whatever came to mind. I remember thinking that they must be incredibly gifted public speakers, because everything they had to say was hilarious, right on target, and sometimes, more memorable than the wedding itself! These guys would stand up and appear so fearless. I had no idea how they did it.

I finally started talking to some of them about their speeches and to my great surprise, the overwhelming majority of them told me that they’d actually been working on that speech for some time, and that there was a very specific way that they crafted their speech. After talking to many of them, I had an epiphany about what it really takes to deliver killer best man toasts or speeches.

Out of everyone I talked to, I noticed that they had three main things in common – they appeared fearless, they were funny, and their balance of humor, timing, and memories was flawless! On being fearless…you might be really nervous about speaking in front of a large crowd. The first time I did public speaking when i was unprepared I was very nervous. Remember this – preparation brings peace. That is, if you can get a grasp on your speech ahead of time, you can be at peace when you deliver it, and come across as being totally fearless. On being funny, let me just say this… Anyone can search for best man speech jokes on the internet. However, it’s much more about picking the right best man jokes than the funniest ones. If you pick the wrong one with the wrong humor, you’re sunk. There’s nothing worse than telling a joke and NO ONE laughing! The last point – being flawless. This is the tough one. The balance between the humor and the memories is crucial. It’s not just about looking for best man speech examples online and then copying that and using it. It’s about what works for the situation you are in. In addition, the way the speech is begun and the way it’s ended HAVE to be strong. If they’re not, your speech falls flat.

I hope this has given you a little idea of a few important points you’ll want to think about in writing your wedding speech. The most important thing I’ve come to realize is that with every great and memorable toast or speech, there is a method to the madness. Believe it or not, there is in fact a correctbest man speech structure to consider when writing your speech.
